Tydings Hall Camellia Collection, November 20, 2017
The Tydings Hall Camellia collection was mostly planted in October of 2009. A few of the camellias were planted before that date and are unidentified. These photos were taken on November 20, 2017.
Camellias usually bloom from late fall through early spring, depending upon weather. Some Camellias bloom primarily in the fall and others primarily in the spring. Some may bloom in both seasons, including in the winter if you are in a mild enough climate.
The Norfolk Botanical Garden in Norfolk, Virginia has one of the largest Camellia collections in the United States. The climate in Norfolk is much more conducive to growing many kinds of Camellias than is our climate in College Park, Maryland.
Some of our Camellias are cold hardy hybrids bred by Dr. William L. Ackerman of the nearby United States National Arboretum.
